Phthalates

What are phthalates?  It is a chemical used to soften rubber.  It makes the jelly toys that have become much more common in recent times.  The use of phthalates, besides making the toy softer, more flexible and sometimes transparent, also makes it less expensive and often of lesser quality.

Phthalates have long been banned in the EU for children's toys, as they are thought to be cancer related.  So why are they still allowed in sex toys?  Manufacturers also get around laws about phthalates by labelling the sex toys 'novelties'.

Rubber (and therefore jelly toys) are porous, and so hard to keep clean.  One way to get around the cleaning and putting phthalates inside your body is to use a condom.

Non phthalate sex toys are made from:

*medical grade silicone - cleanable, even by putting it in the dishwasher (if the vibe or bullet is removable) and is hypo allergenic.

*surgical steel

*anodized aluminium

*glass

*properly finished wood (ie laminated so no splinters)

*abs plastic
